The area under the sink is one of the most underutilized places in the house. If you haven’t used the area under your bathroom or kitchen sink and you’re thinking of what to do with it, the best thing to do is to convert it into an organized storage space.
This area is great for storing different kinds of items such as cleaning supplies, towels, bathroom supplies, etc. Although the area is smaller than a regular cabinet (with some annoying pipes inside!), you can still make it look nice and organized with a little inspiration and creativity.
Having that extra space where you can put your stuff in is really great, especially if you have limited space in the house.
Before learning how to maximize the area under your sink, you need to declutter and clean the area. This means throwing away items that aren’t usable anymore or have already expired. Also, make sure that the items you’re putting in there don’t attract pests (NO food or drinks!).
Okay, so here are the things you need to know about fully using the area under your sink.
1. Categorize the items to store inside. Separating the items and then grouping together similar kinds makes it easier for you to choose a container where to put them. Items that belong in the same category and have similar sizes also need to go together. For example: insect sprays and disinfectant sprays should be together, while sponges are kept in a separate container; same goes for tissue paper/ toilet paper.
2. Don’t forget to measure the size of the area under the sink before you go to the store to buy the containers. Make sure the containers will fit inside.
3. Use labels to easily identify the items inside. This will also make your life easier because you can find things quickly, especially when you’re in a hurry.
4. Choose the right containers to organize your items. The size of the area under the sink will determine what type of containers you can put inside.
For example, if you have a high vertical area under the sink, find stackable drawers to maximize the space. It’s also best to use clear stackable drawers/boxes of the same length and width so that they can be placed on top of each other. Most stackable drawers have closed tops so you can prevent insects or pests from contaminating the items inside. These drawers are more suitable for storing makeup, toiletries, and skincare under the sink. Clear stackable drawers/boxes are also useful when you have small items to put under your sink.
Check out these examples below.
Drawers and boxes
You can also try drawers with different sizes of compartments as they also maximize the space very well. Look at this great idea below!
Plastic trays
Another good option is to use containers without a lid on top, such as plastic trays. Plastic trays are easy to find and can be used under both kitchen and bathroom sinks. They can also carry tall items such as shampoo bottles, cleaning liquids, and spray bottles. They also aren’t bulky. Use clear trays so that you can easily see the items and know if you need to replenish them. Non-clear plastic trays are also a good option, choose the one that will work best for you.
Take a look below.
Rotating containers
Round rotating containers, turntables, or “lazy Susans” make nice organizers as well.
Turntables make your items easily accessible as mentioned by Of Space and Mind; plus, some of them have compartments and can also carry tall and large items.
Wire Containers
You can also try wire containers because they’re durable and easy to clean.
Wicker baskets
If you want the area under the sink to look even more aesthetically pleasing, try using wicker baskets as containers, especially the square or rectangular ones, because they look very chic.
Glass jars with lids
Lastly, you can also try using glass jars with lids. They’re pretty containers where you can store cotton, makeup, cotton pads, cotton ear swabs, etc. However, if you have small kids in the house, glass jars might not be a good option as kids can easily reach and break them accidentally.
