Farmhouse-inspired rooms reflect the warm, relaxed, and homey atmosphere that characterizes country-side living, which is the look and feeling that you want to achieve when you’re decorating your farmhouse-style living room.

1. Antique, wooden, or distressed-looking furniture and décor

In farmhouse homes, vintage items and old furniture are not a thing of the past. In fact, it’s better if you have more distressed, country-looking, or traditional furniture. Some of the items that you can include are coffee tables, console tables, vignettes, and side tables.

Take a look at this charming ensemble that consists of a wooden antique door with a railing above it. The coffee table is made of wooden slabs and the end table has a white unfinished-paint look where there’s plenty of rustic charm to go around.

2. Texture on texture (on floors, walls, and ceilings)

Layers of texture are another characteristic of a farmhouse room and should be seen in every part of the space.

You can incorporate texture into your farmhouse-style living room simply by changing your rug! For starters, use rugs made of soft jute or sea grass as they can be compatible with many of the farmhouse styles you can go for! Other popular ones are vintage rugs with different, soft, subtle patterns, distressed oriental design rugs, and vintage traditional rugs.

Now we go to how you can include texture in your ceiling and walls. Here you can see how Krystle Marie Nickels applied a decorative coating for her ceiling using stucco and then added woven baskets to her wall.

Another technique is to make your walls stand out by adding texture, such as by adding wooden shiplap to bare walls. Shiplap walls are one feature that differentiates farmhouse style from other design styles.

3. Iron, distressed, or bronze black lighting fixtures

Of course, the lighting fixtures are important as well! Here are some commonly used lighting fixtures you can install that will give a farmhouse atmosphere to your home: weathered iron or copper chandeliers, rustic chandeliers, and hand-painted table lamps with a distressed white-painted finish.

According to Interior Designer, Lauren Liess, “We brought in antiques (like the iron chandelier) that felt like they could have always been there and let the house breathe with a simple palette of white, wood, earthy greens and glowy browns.”

4. Wire cage as décor

In real farmhouses, cages are used for housing farm animals. Thus, they can also be used as a unique décor statement in farmhouse-inspired living rooms. Cages made of bronze (or other metals) are perfect for these. Cage lighting fixtures include lampshades, sconces, chandeliers, and drop lights.

5. Neutral mantel with natural and brass décor

Farmhouse style is characterized mostly by warm earth tones. In decorating your fireplace mantel, choose a neutral theme (for example, beige, off-white, light gray, dark olive green, or bluish gray colors) and find pieces that are natural (such as leaves or a wreath) coupled with brass elements (like a brass antique mirror and brass or weathered candlestick) that will complete the whole look. You can also add beautiful vases or pottery containing dried flowers or leaves.

6. Farmhouse framed artwork

Whenever you enter a farmhouse living room, you can easily feel the warmth and inviting atmosphere. The vibe is not indifferent or cold. The farmhouse concept is homey and depicts values such as togetherness, and takes in countryside living and scenery including gardening, enjoying warm sunsets, and love for farm animals.

Choose wall décor that will make your home feel cozy all year round with these wall décor items.

If you want a welcoming vibe a “Farmhouse” or “Gather” welcome sign is something you should consider. The rustic ones are especially nice and set the mood when you enter the home.

7. Firewood/logs in the fireplace and other areas

In old farmhouses, firewood is used for cooking and for providing heat during cold months, but you can also place logs in the fireplace or stack them underneath your cabinets or shelves. It gives this homey country feel that is warm and blissful.

8. Thrift store finds transformation/ DIY

Now this is one of my favorites! Transforming or repurposing things is something you should consider too, and let your creativity shine!

Rachel from The Ponds Farmhouse got this silverware box from a thrift store, painted it, and transformed it into a small storage box or, as she calls it, “a handy stationary cabinet” to store stationery, office items, TV remote controls, and other stuff.

Look at the before and after photos!
