In this post, we’ll show you how to decorate your living room wall.
The living room is one of the areas of the house where we want to be creative with our decorating. I think most probably because it’s where we welcome our guests, enjoy hours watching Netflix, and have truly great conversations with our family, so we want it to be as perfect as possible. Honestly, it feels like a big achievement if we can decorate our living room the way we envision it. This includes making every corner and area of our living room, even the bare walls, beautiful.
Here are some great ideas to make your living room decorating goals a success!
1. Wreaths and wooden signs that change every season
A wreath is one wall décor that is natural and versatile. You can decorate it with fresh or dried flowers, leave it bare, or add foliage depending on the season, for example, orangey red leaves for fall and fresh leaves for spring and summer. You’ll never get bored with how many ways you can style it. Also, throw in a wooden sign that says “Gather” or “Welcome” to make your space more inviting.
2. Plants
Plants always make a living area look fresh and alive. They’re also easy to put up since you only need some wall-mounted plant holders or hanging shelves, which are easy to find in most stores. Holders and shelves are easy to fasten to your wall using adhesive tape without making a hole in your wall.
3. Mirrors in different shapes and sizes
This is the most common wall décor of all and I know most homes have it already, but I recommend changing or swapping mirrors once in a while to make things more interesting. Also, choose a mirror that’s unique and matches the current style of your living room.
One good tip in choosing a mirror for a large wall is that the size of the mirror (or other wall art) should match the size of the wall. Don’t place a small wall décor against a huge wall; otherwise, it won’t look good and proportional at all.
4. Unique lantern wall gallery
Another awesome idea is to create a pattern using multiples of the same object when working on large walls, such as this lantern wall gallery from Bria Hammel Interior’s Scottsdale project.
5. A lovely book wall
Got a lot of old or vintage books? Organize them and create a book wall in your living room.
6. Peg boards aesthetic
I just love how creative this is! Yes, peg boards can be used as wall décor that actually gives a hint of minimalism when you tack only a few hooks and accessories onto them.
7. Flower power
In this room decorated by Styled By Influence, the large floral arrangement of dried flowers and leaves makes a great focal point in the room and gives life to the gray wall. The rattan divider also adds texture and complements the rattan side table and wooden coffee table pairing.
8. Picture-perfect gallery
Of course, a wall won’t be complete without a picture gallery. A picture gallery is a wonderful way to showcase paintings, vintage art collection, your family photos, or botanical prints.
Check out some great ideas below.
The two tall beautiful pieces of artwork hanging on the wall over the sofa serve two main purposes, according to Bria Hammel Interiors: to accentuate the 10-foot ceiling and to make a great impact when guests walk up the stairs.
A picture gallery of photos depicting “old Hollywood” printed in black and white and placed inside equally sized white frames gives a classic and clean feel to this living room.
Here, we see a nice vintage bohemian art collection with vibrant colors arranged beautifully above the console table and sofa. Take note that the frames don’t need to be the same size or color, which makes the collection look more interesting yet still cohesive. Lots of colors are one of the boho style elements, and different bold colors look great together with various shapes and patterns. After all, boho décor takes your imagination and creativity to a whole new level by allowing you to express yourself with décor that isn’t stiff or structured.
More boho wall art are shown below, with a fall-inspired look focusing on colors such as orange, maroon, and brown.
This wall art and photo gallery showing a map and depicting wildlife (deer, elephants, and other animals) and nature enhances the overall masculinity of this room.
According to interior designer Bria Hammel, she loves “the masculine touch that these darker hues and textured accents bring to this room”.
Do you remember Andy Warhol’s brilliant pop art “32 Campbell’s Soup Cans”? Yup, we’re totally getting the same vibe here!
One of my favorites is botanical prints! They make such a pretty organic wall décor option. Best tip for a column gallery wall is to use at least 4 to 6 frames that are vertically arranged. Same is true with a horizontal gallery wall.
Don’t let all those nice photos (wedding photos, travel photos, kids’ photos, or just random shots!) stay in your camera or phone. Print them in black and white and make a grid gallery in your living room for all those great memories. For a grid gallery wall, you can arrange 6, 9, or 12 identically sized frames, according to Framebridge.
9. Natural mantel décor
A beautiful neutral color dominates this cottage-style living room. So to complement the DIY painted brick wall, Cindy of Florals and Sage used a brass mirror, differently sized vases with dried flowers, and books to style her tan-toned mantel.
10. Ledge or cornice styling
If you want your bare wall to spark visual interest and showcase a variety of ornaments, a ledge is a good idea to try. You can arrange and display different items such as plants, picture frames, vases, books, and candles.
I love the shabby chic styling here. A simple ledge with crown molding accentuates the space above the TV along with the distressed window pane on the side.
11. The good old clock
Old-style? Maybe yes, but a grandfather clock does make a space or bare wall look incredibly classy and it blends well with a rustic, eclectic, traditional, or shabby chic living room. In some homes, this clock is also seen in the entryway near the living room. If the grandfather clock looks too dark for your current interior, you can repaint it or sand it to give it a weathered look.
12. Rustic wooden blanket ladder
A super simple yet pretty way to decorate a bare wall is to lean a blanket ladder against it. It’s functional and doesn’t take up a lot of space.
13. Wall lighting
Lighting can make a big difference in the mood and ambiance of your living room. Aside from a gallery, a sconce or wall-mounted light is in itself a decorative piece and serves to illuminate a wide area or make a small area look larger.
14. Macramé art
Another bohemian element you can use is macramé, which adds personality and texture to your living room.
15. Necklaces and other trinkets
Hang your necklaces using some hooks to give your wall extra appeal!
16. Wicker baskets
Wicker baskets bring an inviting and natural element to a living room. They’re mostly used in a farmhouse, boho, or rustic interior and are easy to mix and match with other types of décor as they come in different shapes and sizes.
17. Chalkboard
If your current living room style is farmhouse-cottage-inspired, then you’ll love having a chalkboard with scribbles of just about anything in your room. It’s not expensive at all and you can even change the notes depending on your mood. To make it really fancy, try calligraphy!
18. Vintage-looking map
A vintage map will look fantastic in your living room as well. Choose a city or country that you want on your wall! For some maps, you can ask the seller (e.g., in Etsy) to customize the size for you. What’s nice about maps is that you can also hang them in a dark wood frame if you’re leaning toward a more traditional look.
