Here are our 20 best organizing ideas for your kids’ stuff. I’m sure you’re gonna love them!

1. Designate a proper place for every toy

It’s important to start with the right organizing advice! As mentioned by Moore Organized, “Kids thrive in an ordered and predictable environment. That means, the best way to organize the kids toys starts by giving a place for every type of toy to be stored when not in use.”

2. Do a regular assessment of what your kids truly enjoy

There’s a big chance that your kids have already collected a lot of stuff by now. But it’s crucial to do a cleanup regularly and “narrow [them] down to things they’re truly interested in in this stage of their life. Things that they play with AT LEAST on a weekly basis,” Moore Organized also pointed out. This week it could be books, next week it could be Lego! Keep things interesting for the kids and give them something new to learn every week!

3. Create a system for storing the kids’ toys

It’s important to have a system for organizing your kids’ toys, games, and supplies. It not only helps you clean your home of unwanted mess but also saves time when decluttering. Of Space and Mind shared their valuable tips that you can surely use.

a. Choose smaller bins for storing toys and games as they’re lighter and easier to clean.

b. Use durable, transparent containers/ storage bins so that toys can be easily identified.

c. Stick labels on the containers for easier organization. The kids will be able to understand the labels once they reach reading age.

d. Place toys and games that the kids regularly use in the bottom or lower part of the shelf. Toys/crafts that require adult supervision must be placed at the top of the shelf.

e. Shuffle the different containers around, and if the kids aren’t interested in a specific toy or game anymore, you may consider giving it away.

Speaking of toys, I used to love Play-Doh when I was young! If you still have them, store them in clear container bins with labels “Play-Doh” and “Play-Doh accessories”.

4. Apply micro organizing

According to Of Space and Mind, this is a “fancy term” for creating systems within drawers, bins, and baskets.

Here, you can see that they separated pencils from markers and crayons and placed them in different bins. Simple and effective, right?

5. Use different kinds of containers

Organize pencils, pens, stamp pads, scissors, tape, and other things for drawing and school work in pretty, clear plastic canisters. You can choose canisters and containers that either are open on top or have lids to prevent dust from getting inside. Again, don’t forget to use labels! They’re super important for you and your kids to easily find stuff and help kids return them to their proper place after using them… a good training for the kids to tidy their things after playing with them.

6. Try storing your kids’ stuff near the kitchen

According to Neat Little Nest, to keep the kids occupied when they’re in the house, their client used the space near their kitchen to store construction paper, sticker books, markers, etc.

A nice idea is to have kids’ supplies be easily accessible whenever you want your kids to have something to do while you cook a meal!

Everything is neatly stacked and pens are located in the lower part of the cabinet so the kids can easily find what they’re looking for. Just take note that for younger kids, this isn’t advisable, and there should still be adult supervision, especially with sharp objects like pencils and scissors!

7. Organize books according to age group or genre

Keep your kids’ books organized by categorizing them by age group or genre in bookshelves. Markers and pencils can also be placed near the books in pencil holders just in case the kids want to write or draw.

8. Try drawers with compartments

Another awesome way to organize your kids’ school supplies is with drawers. Make a compartment for each kind of item as seen below. You can also buy dividers if you have a big drawer without built-in compartments.

9. Be creative with hanging toys on the wall

This idea is super adorable! This pretty, crocheted wall organizer is useful when it comes to making sure the stuffed toys are in place. You can hang it on a wall or a door. You can also use a macraméd instead of crocheted organizer.

10. Give your children limited access to books at any given time

According to Moore Organized, one of the best things that you can do with children’s books is to “give [kids] just a few to access at any given time” because children aren’t used to handling so many books at the same time. “By keeping most of them out of reach you will help children to learn to respect and care for their books.”

11. Stack ‘em up “like a book on a shelf”

Board games should have a proper place of their own, too. One of the best places is a shelf. Stack board games where the title of the game can easily be seen like what you do with books displayed on shelves. (Make sure the board games can be stored vertically, though.)

12. Make use of your garage space

The garage is an excellent space to store your kids’ toys, especially outdoor sports stuff and equipment such as basketballs, baseball bats, etc. Hang wired baskets on the wall and organize them by type of sport or by size of the toys. For bags, hoola hoops, etc., you can install hooks and hang the items there.

According to Neat Little Nest, if you have lots of items of a similar type, it’s best to further separate the larger group into smaller ones so that the items won’t get lost.

15. Use ledges for toy cars

If you have lots of toy cars, they can easily be displayed in ledges that are slightly tilted so that they’re visible. This will also give your kids something to be excited about whenever they see their toy cars displayed there.

16. Learn to let go—purge or donate!

Don’t forget to do a regular (monthly or quarterly) assessment of what toys your kids currently enjoy. If they’re not interested in them anymore, try to give away the toys to your local orphanages and give these toys a new home!

17. Use more cabinets for less visual clutter

If you’re the type of person who doesn’t want to see visual clutter, hide toys inside cabinets rather than displaying them on open shelves.
