Are you thinking of decorating your bedroom with farmhouse style? We’ll give you great tips and show you lots of cozy farmhouse bedroom ideas including shabby chic, rustic, modern, and old farmhouse ideas.

The farmhouse style has been trending for quite a number of years and is still loved to this day. It’s been adopted in many homes throughout the US and other countries. The reason behind this is that farmhouse style exudes a feeling of coziness, simplicity, and practicality with its warm and neutral color palettes. The mood of a beautiful and simple life that isn’t hurried (the kind of life when you visit the country) also inspires many people to design their homes with a farmhouse look. Given these, it doesn’t mean that farmhouse style is outdated; it has actually evolved into the beautiful modern farmhouse look, country chic or shabby chic.

Firstly, take note of the following tips, and then later we’ll share with you some awesome ideas on what to include in your farmhouse bedroom.

  • Don’t buy all the décor or furniture all at once. Use what you currently have and mix it up with new farmhouse décor. For example, if you have an old distressed chair, you can use it as a nightstand.
  • Thrift stores, vintage stores, or pre-loved marketplace apps are great sources of beautiful and inexpensive farmhouse décor. There are unlimited treasures you can find there!
  • Focus on functionality. A farmhouse-style room should have items that you can actually use. You’ll also get your money’s worth especially if these are items you bought.
  • Try some DIY décor like painting an old table or making a wreath with dried flowers. Later, we’ll give you a few nice ideas on what to repurpose.
  • Use what you have from your garden, like plants and fresh flowers.
  • If you have a current bedroom theme, you can combine it with farmhouse style.  For example, there’s rustic farmhouse, modern farmhouse, or boho farmhouse. However, it needs to look natural and not forced. It’s not recommended to mix more than two designs; otherwise, it may be too overwhelming.
  • Start with something simple, bright, and airy

Don’t be afraid to experiment; as long as you’re happy with the outcome, then it’s all good. It doesn’t need to look polished all the time.

Need more inspiration? Here are some more ideas for you to create a farmhouse bedroom that’s uniquely yours.

1. Make an all-white ensemble with touches of authenticity

Farmhouse style always emphasizes comfort and authentic style. A neutral color brings serenity to the whole space, just like in this bedroom from The Simply Distressed. Shiplap walls or matte colored walls, rather than ones that use glossy paint, are seen in most farmhouse bedrooms.

When it comes to décor, no need to show off fancy or “perfect” items because simplicity and creativity are key to making your farmhouse look authentic. Also, imperfection makes a farmhouse style unique compared to other design styles!

Take a look at how Andi of The Simply Distressed hung bare white frames and added a few paint brushes to the bedroom’s shiplap walls to make them look simple yet stunning. The bedside table also has an unglossed finish, which is nice. We also love the old suitcases on the floor topped by a wicker basket!

2. Incorporate a variety of texture and neutral colors

A farmhouse bedroom mostly incorporates reclaimed wood and rustic items with rooms mostly neutral in color like white and cream. In this bedroom, you can see a vintage old shutter with a rough-textured distressed wood that’s been turned into a bed headboard. A nice neutral-colored quilt was added to make the bed really cozy and inviting.

3. Adorn your bedroom with thrift store treasures and family heirlooms

This cozy farmhouse guest bedroom owned and decorated by Rachel of The Ponds Farmhouse evokes a beautiful “cohesive retro feel” with her own mix of old and new décor finds, by using layers and layers of vintage and thrift store items.

First, let’s highlight the antique items. There are family heirlooms such as the antique iron bed, quilt, trunk, and clock, which suit each other beautifully. The special antique clock reminds her husband of the great times he spent at his grandmother’s house.

Next is the vintage bird print she inherited from her aunt, which she purposely hung over a vintage ceiling tile to make a pretty cool wall décor above the bed.

Don’t worry about finding nice and less expensive décor for your farmhouse bedroom because thrift stores are absolutely great places to find these as mentioned before! One of the best items that Rachel found at the thrift store was the lovely wicker tray on the bed, which she decorated with a DIY aged clay pot and some vintage books.

Another thrift store find was an old silverware box (photo below), which she painted and turned into a box for stationery, pens, etc. Pretty cool, right?

4. Achieve great transformations with DIY projects

Another nice idea for your farmhouse bedroom is to transform (remodel) old or thrift store finds. Some thrift store items might not go well with other items in your bedroom, so you may need to tweak them. For example, this beautiful nightstand piece isn’t actually a real card catalog!

Rachel of the The Ponds Farmhouse bought a traditional small chest from a thrift store for $40 but felt it needed to look worn out to match her farmhouse bedroom, so she painted it with Old White Chalk Paint. She then wasn’t satisfied with the transformation, so she cut little square pieces of wood and screwed handles into each of them. Then, she drilled and screwed the handles to the drawers of the old cabinet. Now it fits perfectly with the farmhouse industrial look she was going for.

At the other side of the bedroom, she brought in some vintage plates to hang above the bed and a vintage lamp to accessorize the faux card catalog.

If you don’t have a real fireplace in your bedroom, you can just build a faux fireplace like what Lisa of Irenzy.land did and adorn it with a large mirror, some fresh leaves, candles, and logs to create a captivating vintage theme.

7. Mix metals and natural accents

Farmhouse aesthetic also involves mixing metals and natural accents. A common trend with farmhouse bedrooms is a metal bed frame in tones of black or white. You can also use a hanging chandelier made of bronze or other metal to add flair to the space.

Natural elements can be seen here and there as well. Notice the beautiful touch of dried leaves and flowers dangling from the wooden ladder and arch-shaped wall décor? Leaves also hang above the fireplace area. Moreover, a vintage-inspired wicker trunk at the foot of the bed accessorized with a tufted round pillow, a decorative beaded pillow, and a silver lamp make a great impact.

Woven or wicker baskets can also be placed under the bed or on top of a side table. You can find inexpensive wicker baskets from online and local stores. If you want to make the baskets look vintage or distressed, use sandpaper to lighten and buff them up like what Lisa of Irenzy.land did with this wicker basket she bought brand new at Home Depot.
